Eight Essays on the National Anthem - Kokka Hachiron

A book on waka poetry by Kada Arimaro. It was completed in 1742 (Kanpo 2). In that year, Tayasu Munetake asked for his opinion on 10 points related to waka poetry, and Kada answered 8 of them. Munetake immediately wrote "Eight Debates on the National Poetry" and refuted Arimaro. Arimaro also had Kamo no Mabuchi, who was in Edo at the time, submit his opinion in the form of "Okusetsu on the National Poetry," resulting in a three-way dispute. This incident is called the "Eight Debates on the National Poetry" dispute. Arimaro's position at the time was that poetry was "of no use in the affairs of the world, nor of any use in everyday life." He preferred a style of poetry that was in the Shin-Kokin style. Munetake considered literature to be a teaching, and preferred Man'yoshu-style poetry, which led to a fundamental dispute with Arimaro.

荷田在満(かだありまろ)の歌学書。1742年（寛保2）成立。この年、田安宗武(たやすむねたけ)から和歌に関する10項目について意見を求められ、そのうち8項目について答えたもの。宗武はすぐに『国歌八論余言』を著し、在満に反論し、一方、在満は当時江戸にきていた賀茂真淵(かもまぶち)にも意見を『国歌論臆説(おくせつ)』という形で提出させたため、三者の論争となった。この事件を『国歌八論』論争と称する。このときの在満の立場は、歌は「天下の政務に益なく、また日用常行にも資(たす)くる所なし」という翫歌(がんか)論のそれであった。歌風は新古今風をよしとした。宗武は文芸を教学とみなし、万葉調の歌を好んだため、根本から在満と対立した。
