...The first film music to be recorded is said to have been for the British film The World to Come (1936), composed by Arthur Bliss (and in the US, For Whom the Bell Tolls, composed by V. Young, 1943). Of course, it was not yet a soundtrack per se, but a newly performed piece, but as film soundtracks themselves were recorded and soundtrack records began to appear, what had previously been "music that is not heard by the ears" (Eisler) began to gain a new dimension, detaching itself from the film. Since the 1970s, especially after The Godfather in 1971, soundtracks have been released at the same time as or even before the release of a film, and have even become part of a new film-related business known as merchandising (comprehensive commercialization of films). ...
