One of the primordium that appears during the development of the eye of vertebrates. First, the sides of what will become the diencephalon bulge out to the left and right to form a cyst-like protrusion called the optic vesicle. The tip of the optic vesicle is in contact with the epidermis, and it sinks inward while guiding the lens from the epidermis, forming a cup-like shape together with the eyestalk at the base of the optic vesicle, hence the name optic cup. The sunken part consists of two layers, the outer layer closest to the epidermis will become the retina, and the inner layer will differentiate into a pigment layer. The eyestalk gradually narrows and later becomes the optic nerve. [Sadao Yasugi] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
