The Gospel of Adah (c. 785), the Gospel of Saint Medard (early 9th century), the Gospel of Lorsch (early 9th century), and others of the same lineage are collectively called the "Scuola palatina manuscripts" (also called the "Ada group"); however, as time went on, they tended to have a somewhat more ancient, naturalistic realism. The series of manuscripts known as the "Vienna Coronation Gospels" includes the "Vienna Coronation Gospels" (early 9th century) and the "Aachen Treasury Gospels" (c. 800), and their aerial perspective backgrounds and well-defined figures are so ancient that they are reminiscent of the murals of Pompeii. On the other hand, the Gospel of Ebout (before 835) and the Psalms of Utrecht (820-830), which were produced at a monastery near Reims and are known as the "Reims school," are written with rapid strokes and wavy contours, lacking the serenity of the ancient style. *Some of the terminology used in reference to the "Viennese Coronation Gospel" is listed below.
