A god in Hindu mythology. Meaning "ruler of the family." Also called Ganapati. Said to be either the son of Shiva and Queen Parvati or one of his family. In India, he is generally revered as the god of wisdom and learning, and verses of devotion to him are often placed at the beginning of academic books. He has an elephant face, a long nose, one tusk, four arms, and a long belly. He is revered as the chief deity of the Ganapatiya sect of Hinduism, and was so widely worshipped that he spread to countries surrounding India, and this worship continues to this day. He has also been incorporated into esoteric Buddhism, where he is worshipped as Kankiten or Shoten. インド神話の神。「眷属の支配者」の意。ガナパティともいう。シバ神とパールバティー妃の子とも眷属の一人ともされる。インド一般に,知恵学問の神として尊崇され,学問上の書物の冒頭にこの神に対する帰敬偈がおかれることが多い。姿は,象面で長鼻,1牙,4臂,長腹をもつ。ヒンドゥー教のガーナパティヤ派の主神と仰がれ,インド周辺諸国に伝えられるほど盛んな信仰を受け,今日でもその信仰は存続している。仏教のなかでも密教の信仰に取入れられ,歓喜天または聖天 (しょうてん) として信仰を受けている。
