[New style of church architecture]
The Gothic style was first realized in architecture, especially church architecture, but the name of this style is also applied to sculpture, painting, and crafts that were developed in harmony with it. The characteristics of Gothic church architecture are generally three structural elements: ribbed vault, pointed arch, and flying buttress, and it is said that the systematic application of these elements created an architectural style with a remarkable sense of loftiness (although there are examples of Gothic architecture that have wooden ceilings and yet express loftiness, it was stone vault architecture that was the driving force behind the formation of the style). These three elements were already present in Romanesque architecture. …
