...In 1697, Italian actors were ordered to leave France by King Louis XIV, but during their century-long stay they provided a variety of influences to French culture. With the death of Louis XIV in 1715, Italian actors resumed their theatrical activities, and the Italian Theatre (Comédie Italienne) was founded, which brought about a resurgence in popularity. However, the Commedia dell'arte had already become heavily Frenchified, and had lost its original Italian vitality. In 1762, the Italian Theatre was absorbed into the Opéra Comique, bringing an end to the era of Italian actors.
