Asmodee (English spelling) [France]

A demon that appears in the Old Testament apocryphal Book of Tobit. Also called Asmodeus. In Jewish tradition, he is the king of demons. Some traditions say that he was the incestuous son of Tubal-cain (Genesis 4:22) and his sister Noema. He is thought to have descended from the wrathful god Aeshema-daeva, who was brought to Israel by contact with Persia around the 2nd century BCE. In the Book of Tobit, he possessed Sarah, daughter of Raguel, and killed her seven husbands seven times on each of their wedding nights. Tobit's son Tobias drives Asmodeus away from Sarah with the help of the angel Raphael.
