When the new year begins, people make bows to the gods (tshen), bow in all directions, bow to the spirits of their ancestors, give New Year's greetings to their elders (hai-nian), and children receive New Year's money (opssai-sen). Incidentally, the custom of drinking toso (sweet sake) appears in the 6th century Jingchu Saijiki, but it fell out of use in China early on. …
