Ichichu

Japanese: 惟中 - いちゅう
Ichichu

A haiku poet of the early Edo period. He was of the Okanishi clan. His other names were Ichi-ichiken, Hokusui Roshi, and others. He was born in Shikano, Inaba Province (Tottori Prefecture). He later became a Confucian scholar in Okayama and was also well versed in waka, renga, and calligraphy, but he also studied haiku under Nishiyama Soin in Osaka. At the beginning of the Enpo era (1673-81), he took advantage of the rise of the Soin-ryu Danrin haiku school and launched a brilliant literary career. In 1678 (Enpo 6), he moved to Osaka and appointed himself Soin's successor. He was the leading debater in Danrin, and an advocate of haiku allegory, and also wrote a number of polemics with the old Teimon school, but after the decline of Danrin at the end of the Enpo era, he distanced himself from haiku and returned to Confucianism. His grave is in Ginzan-ji, Tennoji Ward, Osaka City.
