...The Foreign Legion was gradually reduced in size as various French colonies gained independence, and as of 1981, it numbered about 8,000. The Spanish Foreign Legion was founded in 1921 and fought under General Franco in the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), helping him establish his government. In general, many of those who joined the Foreign Legion had military experience, and most of the volunteers were German or Swiss.
