1889‐1973 A great Egyptian scholar, he was given the title of Amid al-Adab (Pillar of Literature) and was also a writer. He was born in the village of Maghagha in the Minya Governorate, Egypt, into a poor family whose father worked for a sugar company. At the age of three, he suffered from eye inflammation, which caused him to go blind. At the age of nine, he memorized the Quran and eventually entered Al-Azhar. The details of this experience are detailed in his autobiographical work, al-Ayyām (Book of the Days) (translated in Japanese). He completed his doctoral thesis, "Memoirs of Abu Allah," and went to France. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
