Frémont, John Charles
Born January 21, 1813 in Savannah, Georgia
[Died] July 13, 1890, New York American explorer, soldier, and politician. After graduating from the College of Charleston, he became an officer in the U.S. Army Survey Service in 1838, and participated in five western expeditions between 1841 and 1854. During this time, he traveled to California, which was under dispute with Mexico, in 1845, and refused the Mexican government's order to leave, aiding the rebels. In 1846, he occupied California with Admiral R. Stockton, and served as its military governor for a time. In 1848-49, gold was discovered on his property in California, and he became very wealthy. In 1850, he became a U.S. Senator. In the 1856 presidential election, he ran as a Republican candidate, but was defeated. During the Civil War, he was appointed commander of the Western Army as a major general in the Union Army, and played an active role, but he disagreed with President A. Lincoln, who thought that Frémont's declaration to free Missouri slaves fighting with the Union Army was premature, and he was dismissed from his position as commander and retired. After the war, he invested in railroads in the West and served as Governor of Arizona from 1878 to 1883.
