American bottle-making engineer. The son of a coal miner, he grew up as a glass worker and invented a fully automatic bottle-making machine, which he patented in 1895 and 1904. He mechanized the winding process that distributes molten glass to the machine, making it possible to produce 2,500 bottles per hour, compared with 200 bottles per hour with a semi-automatic machine. In 1903, he organized the Owens Bottle-Making Machine Company, serving as its vice president from 1915 to 1923, and in 1916 he organized the Libby-Owens Plate Glass Company (which was absorbed by the British company Pilkington in 1986, and was further acquired in 2006 and became a subsidiary of Nippon Sheet Glass), serving as its vice president until 1923.
