Born: September 21, 1921 in Padang, West Sumatra [Died] May 19, 1979. A Padang Indonesian writer. He began writing short stories and plays during the Japanese military occupation. He is famous for his short stories, the "Sketches from the Underground" series, which depict the lives of ordinary people under military rule with humor, bitter irony, and a briskly paced style. His bitter style remains unchanged in "Surabaya," which is based on the war for independence. He moved to Malaysia in 1957, and from 1968 taught Indonesian literature at a university in Australia. The above two works, along with his earlier romantic works, are included in "Dari Ave Maria Ke Djalan Lain Ke Roma" (1948), from "Ave Maria" to "Another Road to Rome."
