A lake in the southern part of Luzon, Philippines. Recently it has also been simply called "Laguna (Lake)". It stretches from the southeast of Manila across the provinces of Laguna and Rizal, and with an area of 891 km2, it is the largest lake in the Philippines. It is thought to have been formed when part of Manila Bay was cut off by a slight uplift on the eastern shore of Manila Bay and the accumulation of volcanic debris from volcanic activity in the southern part of the lake. Volcanic fallout has accumulated on the bottom of the lake, making it shallow at less than 5m in most places, but it has been an important place of life for the surrounding residents since ancient times as a fishing ground and a transportation route.
