He emphasized tawhid (the oneness of God) and qadar (God's predestination) and tried to reject anything that he perceived as potentially leading to shirk (polytheism). Persecuted in his hometown, he became involved in the expansion of Muḥammad bin Sa'ūd (?-1765)'s power movement in the Dar'iyya of Najd, which expanded throughout the Arabian Peninsula in tandem with the political rise and fall of the House of Saud. The rule of the House of Saud is sometimes called the Wahhabi Sultanate.
