A steep mountain range that runs from northwest to southeast across the southeastern peninsula of Papua New Guinea, towering behind the capital, Port Moresby. It is said to have been formed by mountain building in the Miocene, and extends to the Central Highlands of New Guinea in the west, and gradually decreases in height to the Louisiane Islands in the east. The highest peak is Mount Victoria (4073m), and there are other snow-capped peaks of 3000-4000m, including Mount Albert Edward.
