Owen Stanley Range

Japanese: オーエン･スタンリー[山脈]（英語表記）Owen Stanley Range

A steep mountain range that runs from northwest to southeast across the southeastern peninsula of Papua New Guinea, towering behind the capital, Port Moresby. It is said to have been formed by mountain building in the Miocene, and extends to the Central Highlands of New Guinea in the west, and gradually decreases in height to the Louisiane Islands in the east. The highest peak is Mount Victoria (4073m), and there are other snow-capped peaks of 3000-4000m, including Mount Albert Edward. [Ishii Masao]

パプア･ニューギニア南東の半島部を北西より南東に走り，首都ポート･モレスビーの背後にそびえる急峻な山脈。中新世の造山運動によりできたとされ，西はニューギニア中央高地へ，東はしだいに高度を減じルイジエード諸島へとそれぞれ連なる。最高峰はビクトリア山(4073m)で，このほかにもアルバート･エドワード山をはじめ3000～4000m級の雪を頂く高峰をもつ。【石井真夫】
