The Uzbeks have passed down a great deal of folklore, most of which is now recorded. In addition to stories featuring animals and fairies, there are interesting stories based on everyday life, such as laṭīfa (humorous tales) in which the joker and wise man Nasreddin Efendi tells stories with a touch of social satire. Dastan (epic poetry) is also common, and is diverse, ranging from heroic and war stories, miraculous tales, and those inspired by classical literature, to modern works that sing of peasants' resistance against authority.
