This is a process in which dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons is carried out in the presence of oxygen (or air) to produce unsaturated compounds. For example, reactions such as the production of styrene from ethylbenzene and butadiene from n -butene are examples of this. Normal dehydrogenation reactions, in which hydrogen from the raw hydrocarbons is released as hydrogen molecules, are large endothermic reactions, and therefore higher temperatures are more favorable for the product system. However, if the reaction is carried out at high temperatures, carbonaceous matter is deposited on the catalyst, causing a rapid decrease in activity.
