Before 1128 - 1202 A Cistercian monk and theologian. His French name was Alain de Lille. Born in Lille, he went to Paris and studied philosophy, theology, and literature, earning him the nickname "doctor universalis." He later became a missionary to the Albigensians, who were considered part of the Cathars. His "De Treatise" was written at that time. Two poems he wrote combining rationalism and mysticism in the late 12th century, "Lamentation of Nature" and "Anticlaudian," are famous in the history of literature.
