A port town on the Gulf of Aden in northwestern Somalia. Known to Arab geographers since ancient times, including Ibn Said, it was an Islamic settlement of the Adal Kingdom in the Middle Ages. In 1518, it was attacked by the Portuguese, and in the 17th century it was known as Sharif of Morcha, in 1875 it came under Egyptian control, and in 1884 it was under British control. It was the winter capital of British Somaliland until 1941. It is now a fishing base. A deep-water port was completed with the assistance of the Soviet Union in 1969, and the volume of cargo handled has increased since then. During the monsoon season from October to March, it is a bustling trading center for inland nomads who gather here with livestock, leather, dairy products, etc., and merchants who come from the Arabian Peninsula and India carrying dates, rice, cloth, metalwork, etc. Population: 70,000 (1985 estimate).
