A Rinzai sect monk in the early modern period. Also called "Shotai." His given name was Shotai, and his pen names were Saisho or Seisho. His pen name was Tsukiura or Nanyo. He studied poetry under Ninyo Shugyo, and later became the successor of the Chinese Shoshun of the Muso school. In 1584 (Tensho 12), he became the abbot of Shokoku-ji Temple, and the following year he moved to Rokuon-in Temple and became a Tengasoroku (Record of Priests of the Country), and was in charge of the Rinzai Five Mountain School. He was later highly valued by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and was invited to serve as the chief priest for the Great Buddha of Hoko-ji Temple, which Hideyoshi had built, and to be the founder of Daikomyo-ji Temple in Fushimi, which Hideyoshi had also built, and Toyoko-ji Temple within Shokoku-ji Temple, and eventually became the steward of diplomatic documents under the Toyotomi government.

近世初期の臨済宗の僧。〈しょうたい〉ともいう。承兌は諱(いみな),字(あざな)は西笑(さいしよう∥せいしよう)。号は月浦または南陽。詩文を仁如集尭に学び,のち夢窓派の中華承舜の法嗣となる。1584年(天正12)相国寺住持,翌年鹿苑院に移って天下僧録(てんがそうろく)となり,臨済五山派を総管した。そののち,豊臣秀吉に重用され,秀吉が造営した方広寺大仏の供養導師,また秀吉創建の伏見の大光明寺,相国寺山内の豊光寺開山に招請され,やがて豊臣政権下の外交文書のことを管領した。
