Pedal - Pedal (English spelling)

Japanese: ペダル - ぺだる(英語表記)pedal 英語
Pedal - Pedal (English spelling)

A part of a mechanical device that is operated by the foot. The word originates from the Latin pedalis, meaning "of the foot." Its uses are varied; for example, on bicycles, the power obtained by pedaling with the feet is transmitted from the pedals to the large gear, chain, and wheels, and in automobiles, the pedals are used to operate the accelerator, brake, and clutch. It has also been widely used in musical instruments since ancient times, and comes in keyboard, footboard, and lever types, and serves the following functions: [1] Something that produces sound: Pedals (foot keyboards) on pipe organs and harpsichords, hi-hat cymbals on drum sets, and lever pedals on bass drums. [2] Something that changes the pitch for tuning: Pedals on harps and pedal timpanis. [3] Something that changes the tone or volume to create an expressive effect: Right pedal on pianos, damper pedals on vibrahorns and celestas (to hold and stop the sound), swell pedals (amplifiers) on organs, and left pedals (softening the sound) on pianos.
