A resort city in southern California, USA. Population 40,000 (1990). Located 160 km east of Los Angeles, in the Coachella Valley at the eastern foot of the San Jacinto Mountains. The largest city in the Colorado Desert. Blessed with a dry and warm climate, it is a nationally famous winter resort with many swimming pools, golf courses, and art galleries. Famous shops and nightclubs line Palm Canyon Drive in the city center. Built in the 1880s, it was named Agua Caliente (Spanish for "hot water") because of its hot springs.
