Kamisaibara [village] - Kamisaibara

Japanese: 上斎原[村] - かみさいばら

A village in Tomata County, at the northern tip of Okayama Prefecture. Population 980 (1995). Located on the backbone of the Chugoku Mountains at the source of the Yoshii River, the lowest point is at an altitude of 500m. Settlements such as Akawase, Nakatsugawa, Endo, and Kiji, which are scattered along the Yoshii River valley, were once mining settlements or woodworking settlements. The central settlement is Kamisaihara, facing Shimosaihara in Okutsu Town to the south. Forestry and livestock farming are the main industries, and in summer, rotational grazing is practiced, with cattle being pastured on the Takashimizu and Onbara Plateaus. Collective chestnut cultivation is also popular. At Ningyo Pass on the border with Tottori Prefecture, there is a uranium mine run by the Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation.

岡山県北端，苫田（とまた）郡の村。人口980(1995)。吉井川源流域の中国山地脊梁部に位置し，最も低い所でも標高500mの高地にある。吉井川の河谷沿いに点在する赤和瀬，中津河，遠藤，木路などの集落はかつての鉱山集落や木地屋集落である。中心集落は上斎原で，南隣の奥津町の下斎原と対する。林業，牧畜を基幹産業とし，夏季に高清水･恩原高原に放牧する輪換放牧が行われる。また栗の集団栽培も盛ん。鳥取県境の人形峠には動力炉･核燃料開発事業団のウラン鉱山がある。
