Brick chamber tomb - Senshitsubo

Japanese:
Brick chamber tomb - Senshitsubo
A tomb chamber constructed using bricks when the dead were buried. In China's Central Plains region during the Western Han period, many tomb chambers were constructed using hollow bricks (large bricks made by pasting clay slabs together into a box shape and forming them into the shape of a board or pillar) instead of precious wood. From the mid-Western Han period onwards, the idea of creating underground spaces similar to living rooms above ground became popular, and tomb chamber spaces expanded. Hollow bricks that matched the structure of the tomb chamber, such as triangular ones, appeared, but hollow brick tombs eventually fell out of fashion due to the use of small bricks. Small bricks are rectangular bricks like bricks, and because they make it possible to build high ceilings in the style of a dome or arch, they became widespread throughout China and were used for a long time as a structural material for tombs until the early modern period.
