This city occupies the area around the southwest foot of Mt. Fuji in central eastern Shizuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1942. Its center is Omiya, which developed as a town in front of the shrine gate of Sengen Shrine, and is located at the southern trailhead of Mt. Fuji. After the opening of the Minobu Line in the early Taisho period, the film, chemical fiber, and paper industries developed using the abundant groundwater, and with the recent development of the expressway network, the chemical and machinery industries have developed rapidly. Dairy farming is popular in the Asagiri Plateau in the north, and tobacco and tea cultivation is thriving in the southern foothills. It is home to Shiraito Falls, Wakutama Pond, and Taiseki Temple.
