...Some species are attracted to lights at night and fly to houses. Among planthoppers, the white-backed planthopper, the brown planthopper, and the sparse brown planthopper, Laodelphax striatellus (illustration), are well-known as major rice pests. The white-backed planthopper, Sogatella furcifera (illustration), is called the "summer planthopper" because its peak occurs in July and August, while the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (illustration), is called the "autumn planthopper" because its peak occurs in September and October.
