…Influenced by the national romanticism of the first half of the 19th century, and directly inspired by the appearance of the Finnish epic poem, the Kalevala, this epic work, consisting of 20 chapters and about 19,000 lines, was compiled by F.R. Faehlmann (1798-1850) from prose material collected from all over Estonia, and his friend F.R. Kreutzwald (1803-82) arranged it in the form of poetry using the rhythm and parallelism of folk songs. Although there were many difficulties in publishing it at first, a popular edition was published in 1862 and caused a national sensation. …
