Born December 27, 1799. The fourth son of Hayashi Shosai. After his nephew Hayashi Soken died of illness, he succeeded the head of the family and became Daigaku no Kami. At the time of the signing of the Treaty of Peace and Amity between the United States and Japan in 1854, he served as plenipotentiary along with Ido Satohiro and others. He died September 17, 1859. He was 60 years old. Born in Edo. His given name was Akira. His pen name was Hitchu. He was commonly known as Shikibu. His other pen names were Gonnan and Gekiho.
