Hayashi Fukusai
1801 * -1859 A Confucian scholar in the late Edo period.
Born December 27, 1799. The fourth son of Hayashi Shosai. After his nephew Hayashi Soken died of illness, he succeeded the head of the family and became Daigaku no Kami. At the time of the signing of the Treaty of Peace and Amity between the United States and Japan in 1854, he served as plenipotentiary along with Ido Satohiro and others. He died September 17, 1859. He was 60 years old. Born in Edo. His given name was Akira. His pen name was Hitchu. He was commonly known as Shikibu. His other pen names were Gonnan and Gekiho. His works include "Goshoseki Raihaku" (Records of the History of Books) and "Tsukou Ichiran" (Issues of Navigation).

寛政12年12月27日生まれ。林述斎の4男。甥(おい)の林壮軒の病死で本家をつぎ,大学頭(だいがくのかみ)となる。嘉永(かえい)7年(1854)日米和親条約調印の際,井戸覚弘(さとひろ)らと全権をつとめた。安政6年9月17日死去。60歳。江戸出身。名は韑(あきら)。字(あざな)は弼中。通称は式部。別号に梧南,藕潢。著作に「御書籍来歴志」,編著に「通航一覧」など。
