existentia

existentia

[Essentia and Existence]
In this metaphysical way of thinking, individual things are perceived as a combination of form and matter, and the concepts of "existence" and "being," which are supposed to be simple, are split into two distinct concepts. In other words, "to be" is split into two meanings: "to ti estin" in the sense of "what something is" as determined by form, and "to hoti estin" in the sense of "whether something actually exists" as determined by matter, and this "to ti estin" is translated into Latin as quidditas or essentia (essential existence, "to be"), and "to hoti estin" is translated as existentia (actual existence, "there is") (although the translation "essential existence" may sound unnatural to our sense of language, since essentia comes from the verb esse, which means "to be/exist," it must be translated as "essential existence"). By the way, a major characteristic of the metaphysical way of thinking is that in this divided concept of existence, the "essential existence" determined by forms that are directly linked to supernatural principles always occupies the upper hand.
