Davenant's company (1661-71), and later ran the Dorset Garden Theatre (1671-82), where he performed Shakespeare's plays adapted by J. Dryden. His best roles included Hamlet and Sir Toby Belch in Twelfth Night. His wife, M. Saunderson, was one of the first English actresses.
