existence

Japanese: existence
existence

...A position that seeks the original way of being of human beings in subjective existence. Existence (existentia) means actual existence, and was originally used as a concept opposite to essence (essentia) in medieval scholastic philosophy. For example, the existence of a paper knife means the existence of individual, concrete, real paper knives that vary in material and shape, but their essence refers to the existence of a standard by which this piece of wood, that metal rod, and that ivory carving can all be said to be paper knives.
