…The world's highest peak, 8,848m above sea level, is located in the central Himalayas, on the border between Nepal and Tibet.
[Discovery and Naming]
In 1852, while collating the results of the Great Trigonometric Survey of India, a peak known as Peak XV was discovered to be the highest peak in the world. Since the local name was unknown, it was named after George Everest, the former Surveyor General of India (in office 1830-43). The Tibetan name Chomolungma (Chomolungma Peak in Chinese) is said to mean "Goddess of the Earth" or "Mother Goddess of the World."
