Born: April 1, 1746. Bosset Died: August 25, 1807. Paris. French jurist and politician. He worked as a lawyer in Aix-en-Provence, and served as an assistant at the Provencal court from 1778 to 1781. After the establishment of the First Republic in 1793, he went to Paris, where he was briefly imprisoned as the brother-in-law of J. Simeon, a leader of the Provencal counter-revolutionaries. After his release, he was elected to the Conseil des Anciens in 1795, and became its chairman. During a coup d'état by the Directory in 1897, he fled to Switzerland, and when Napoleon became regent in 1800, he returned to Paris and worked on drafting the French Civil Code. He is known to have been particularly responsible for the marriage and inheritance laws. He became a member of the Academie de France in 1806.
