〘Noun〙① A sweet elixir of immortality bestowed from heaven. In ancient Chinese legend, it is said to fall from the heavens as a happy omen that the emperor will rule benevolently. ※The Chronicles (720), Tenmu 7th Year, October (Kitano Honin) "Then it floated with the wind among the pine forests and reed fields. The people of the time said, 'It is nectar .'" [Lunheng - Kozui]② (Translation of amṛta. Transliterated as amṛta. Also translated as immortality, sacred wine, etc.) In India, this refers to a drink that the gods in heaven use to gain immortality. It is said that drinking it will eliminate suffering, make you live longer, and even revive the dead. 〘名〙① 天から与えられる甘い不老不死の霊薬。中国古来の伝説では、天子が仁政を行なうめでたい前兆として天から降るといわれている。※書紀(720)天武七年一〇月(北野本訓)「則ち風に随ひて松林と葦原とに飄(ひひ)る。時の人、曰はく、『甘露(カムロ)なり』といふ」 〔論衡‐講瑞〕② (amṛta の訳語。阿蜜㗚多と音訳。不死、神酒などとも訳す) インドで天の神々が不死を得るための飲料をいう。これを飲むと苦悩を去り、長寿になり、死者をもよみがえらせるという。転じて、仏の教え、仏の悟りなどにたとえる。※栄花(1028‐92頃)もとのしづく「曼陀枳尼の殊勝の池に沐浴し、四種の甘露を嘗(な)め」※今昔(1120頃か)一「我、甘露(かんろ)の法門を開て彼(かの)阿羅邏仙を先づ度せむ」③ (形動) おいしいこと。また、そのさま。美味を表わす語。※新撰類聚往来(1492‐1521頃)上「於甘露(カンロ)之乳水醍醐之上味、難料棟(れうけん)候」④ 瓜の異称。※蔭凉軒日録‐文明一九年(1487)六月二八日「喫梵天甘露」⑤ 夏にカエデ、エノキ、カシなどの樹葉からしたたり落ちる甘味の液汁。その木につく虫、「ありまき」の体内から分泌されたもの。⑥ 煎茶(せんちゃ)の上等のもの。⑦ 「かんろしゅ(甘露酒)」の略。⑧ 「かんろすい(甘露水)①」の略。
