A chartered company that received a royal charter on September 3, 1888. The beginnings of the company date back to when the British India Steamship Shipping Company, founded by Scottish capitalist W. Mackinnon (1823-93), opened a route to Zanzibar in East Africa in 1872 and planned to expand further inland. When the German East Africa Company expanded into the mainland across from Zanzibar in 1885, Britain changed its previous policy of indirectly securing the East African coast through the Zanzibar chief, and began to adopt Mackinnon's long-standing idea of governing the interior through a trading company.
