Pokrovskii, Mikhail Nikolaevich
Born: August 29, 1868, Moscow
[Died] April 10, 1932. Soviet historian, Moscow. Member of the Academy of Sciences. Graduated from Moscow University in 1891. Studied Russian history under VO Klyuchevsky and PG Vinogradov, while joining the Bolshevik Party in 1905. In 1908 he went to Geneva on party business, where he met Lenin. He returned to Russia in August 1917, and in May of the following year became People's Commissar of Education for the newly formed Soviet government. From then on, he was considered the leading historian of the Soviet Union until his death, but in 1936 he was posthumously criticized for being "anti-Marxist." His main works were Russkaya istoriya drevneishikh vremën (A History of Russia from Antiquity) (4 volumes, 1910-13) and Ocherk istorii russkoy kul'tury (Outline of the History of Russian Culture) (2 volumes, 15-18).

ソ連の歴史家。科学アカデミー会員。 1891年モスクワ大学を卒業。 V.O.クリュチェフスキーと P.G.ビノグラドフに師事してロシア史の研究をする一方,1905年ボルシェビキ党に加入。 08年党の仕事でジュネーブに行きレーニンと知合った。 17年8月帰国し,翌年5月新生ソビエト政府の教育人民委員となる。以後死ぬまでソ連を代表する歴史家とみなされていたが,死後,36年「反マルクス的」であるとして批判された。主著『古代からのロシア史』 Russkaya istoriya drevneishikh vremën (4巻,1910~13) ,『ロシア文化史概説』 Ocherk istorii russkoy kul'tury (2巻,15~18) 。
