… Carpets are woven in a rectangular shape, with the design consisting of a central rectangular section and a decorative border around the perimeter. The central section has a wide variety of designs, including medallion designs, animal designs, hunting designs, floral designs, vase designs, garden designs, mihrab designs (which Muslims lay on the floor or ground when praying, and are called sajjāda), geometric designs, and miniature designs. Many Oriental carpets incorporate traditional designs from ancient times, such as the Tree of Life (sacred tree), hunting designs, and animal fighting designs, and many of them incorporate arabesque designs unique to Islam, or convey the image of a flowering, lush, green paradise. …
