Epidermal nevus

...Flat brown spots called nevus spilus are often noticed within a few months of birth, but some appear on the shoulders, chest, etc. after the age of 10.

It is caused by thickening of epidermal cells, and is often arranged in a linear pattern. The surface feels rough and hard to the touch, and the color ranges from brown to blackish brown. There are usually no subjective symptoms, but some people complain of severe itching.
