Cotta, Gaius Aurelius
A Roman politician and poet from the 1st century BC. He formed a group of ambitious young patricians with Livius Drusus, Sulpicius Rufus, and Licinius Crassus. He was briefly exiled, but returned with L. Sulla. He was consul in 75 BC. He was unpopular with the people. He later ruled Cisalpine Gaul.

Cotta, Marcus Aurelius

A Roman soldier of the 1st century BC. Brother of GA Cotta. He fought against Mithradates VI in Bithynia, was briefly captured, and was rescued by L. Lucullus. Later, he captured Heraclea. He was consul in 74 BC. Later, he was executed for embezzlement, despite having donated the captured goods to the treasury.

Roman politician of the 1st century BC. Praetor in 70 BC, consul in 65 BC. A relative of Julius Caesar, he supported M. Cicero and remained neutral during the civil war. In 44 BC, he participated in the legislative decision to call Caesar king outside of Italy.

The German publishing house Cotta'sche Buchhandlung was founded in Tübingen in 1659. JF Cotta (1764-1832) is particularly famous for publishing works by classical authors such as Goethe, Schiller, and Herder.
