Prince - Ouji

Japanese:
Prince - Ouji

This area is located in the center of Kita-ku, Tokyo, and is centered around Oji Station on the JR Keihin-Tohoku Line. It is said that the village was named Oji after Oji Shrine was enshrined there. The JR Keihin-Tohoku Line, Tokyo Metro Namboku Line, Toden Arakawa Line, and National Route 122 pass through the area. In 1932 (Showa 7), Oji-cho and Iwabuchi-cho merged to form Oji-ku, and in 1947 (Showa 22), Oji-ku and Takinogawa-ku merged to form Kita-ku. Near Oji Station, there is a monument marking the birthplace of Western paper. It commemorates the day in 1873 (Meiji 6) when Shibusawa Eiichi founded the Paper Company, the predecessor of the Oji Paper Company, and later introduced machinery from England to make the first Western paper. In Asukayama Park, on the west side of the station, there is a Paper Museum. Additionally, the nearby Oji Inari Shrine is famous for the rakugo story "Oji's Fox."
