A church council convened by Pope Urban II in Clermont, central France, on November 18, 1095. It is famous for beginning with the excommunication of King Philip I of France for infidelity, and for announcing the First Crusade on November 27, the final day of the council. The 32 resolutions adopted at this council played a powerful role in promoting church reform, including the observance of the peace of God, the prohibition of simony and lay investiture, and the prohibition of clergy swearing allegiance to the king or secular lords.
