A city on the Isar River in Bavaria, southeastern Germany. Population 58,700 (2000). In 1204 it became the castle town of the Duke of Landshut of Bavaria, from which the town's name derives. It received a royal charter in 1279, and later developed as the center of the surrounding agricultural region. Currently, it is the provincial capital of Lower Bavaria, and is home to many government offices, as well as thriving industries in fields such as agricultural machinery, textiles, food, brewing, and electricity. It is a beautiful town that still retains St. Martin's Church, built in the 14th and 15th centuries, and Trausnitz Castle, built in the 12th and 13th centuries, and is also known for the festival play held every three years to commemorate the marriage of Duke Georg in 1475.
