Deed, A. (English spelling) DeedA

[Pathé era and Film Dahl]
In the early 1900s, the Pathé Film Company, led by Charles Pathé, and the Gaumont Film Company, led by Léon Gaumont, rose to prominence and developed into the two major film companies in France. The Pathé Film Company was particularly prosperous from 1903 to 1909, which is known as the "Pathé Film Era." It began with "The Story of a Crime" (1901), directed by Ferdinand Zecca, who was the general manager of Pathé Films, and became the "forerunner of realist film." It then mass-produced numerous films, from "fantasies" imitating Méliès to comedies by André Deed, and seemed to dominate the film market not only in France but in Europe as well. After Deed left for Italy in 1907, he was succeeded by Max Landel (long written as Lande in Japan), and his witty comedies, which would later influence Chaplin, reached their heyday until World War I.
