A city in the southwest of Okayama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1953. The city center developed as an integrated community of the mouth of the Oda River, a tributary of the Takahashi River, and a post town on the Sanyo Road, with its headquarters in Nanukaichi. It is known as the birthplace of traditional Bitchu Kokura weaving, and in recent years has become a major producer of jeans. Other factories making transport equipment, low-voltage electrical appliances, and food containers have been established in the city, and it is developing as an inland industrial city. Grapes are a specialty of the city, and wine is also produced there. The banks of the Oda River are famous for their cherry blossoms. 岡山県南西部の市。1953年市制。市街地は高梁(たかはし)川の支流小田川の渓口集落と山陽道の宿場町が一体となって発達,七日市(なぬかいち)に本陣があった。伝統的な備中(びっちゅう)小倉織の発祥地として知られ,近年はジーンズ生産が盛ん。ほかに輸送用機器,弱電,食品容器製造などの工場立地が進み,内陸型工業都市として発展しつつある。特産にブドウがあり,ワインの生産も行われる。小田川堤は桜の名所。2005年3月小田郡美星町,後月郡芳井町を編入。243.54km2。4万3927人(2010)。
