Gross tonnage (English spelling)

...Previously, gross tonnage and net tonnage, which indicate volume, were defined as 1 ton per 100 cubic feet (2.833 m3). However, after the International Convention on Ship Tonnage Measurement came into effect in 1969, Japan changed its law to use the new tonnage measurement method in 1982, and the differences in tonnage between countries have almost completely disappeared.
