At the end of the 15th century, Ibak of the Shayban family, a descendant of Jochi, formed an alliance with the Taybuga family, which had ruled the middle reaches of the Irtysh River and the lower Tobol River in Western Siberia since the 13th century, and eventually gained real power in the region. With its capital at Kashlik (Sibir, Isker, 17 km upstream from Tobolsk) on the Irtysh River, the Khanate bordered the Kazan Khanate to the west and the Kazakh Khanate to the south, and its specialty furs were exported to Central Asia.
