…Until now, it has been believed that the first person to attempt and actually ride a two-wheeled vehicle was the Frenchman C. de Sivrac (1790), whose bicycle was called a célérifère. However, it has been discovered that Sivrac is a fictitious character, and that a célérifère was a large horse-drawn carriage at the time. Recently, the theory that the German Karl von Drais (1785-1851) was the father of the bicycle has become more popular. Drais is said to have invented the two-wheeled vehicle in 1813, and in 1818 he obtained a patent in France, where it was called a draisienne. …
